The program consists of six days and is divided into two levels. Participants complete Level One over the course of three months and then have the option of moving on to Level Two, again a 3-day program offered over a three month period. Level One develops fundamental leadership skills of PSW’s aspiring to, or moving into, supervisory/managerial roles. Level Two further enhances the skills and knowledge of the PSW related to leadership and management.

A Three Day Certificate Program
Silver Meridian is pleased to announce “The PSW Leadership Program”- Level 1...This new comprehensive certificate program is designed to facilitate the development of leadership skills among PSW’s, and offers long term care organizations with a realistic, supplemental leadership/management role within the nursing department. The timing is ideal, given the nursing workload demands on registered staff, their limited availability, and changing expectations in LTC.

Day 1 – Positive Relationships: Building Mutual Respect and Trust

  • Understand the implications and importance of the PSW leadership role
  • Realize the impact of empowerment on motivation and relationships
  • Build relationships by praising and acknowledging others
  • Practicum One – Catching People Doing Things Rights

Day 2 – Leading the Way: Mentoring and Collaborating

  • Understand how mission, vision and values guide the role of the PSW leader
  • Communicate assertively and effectively by listening and asking open-ended questions
  • Enhance relationships through collaborative problem solving
  • Practicum Two – Applying Situational Leadership

Day 3 – Working Together: Being the Best

  • Facilitate learning through teaching, coaching and supporting others
  • Understand the importance of legislation and standards in ensuring resident quality of care
  • Responding to conflict and confronting negativity with confidence
  • Practicum Three – How Am I Doing? (self-reflection on leadership skills)
Participants gain valuable, first-hand experience through practicum assignments, which are carried out back in the workplace between each of the training days. The participants’ home managers are asked to review and support participants through this process, and practicums are then shared and discussed at subsequent training sessions.

The training days are fast paced and engaging, utilizing a variety of training approaches, including mini-lecturettes, video presentations, group and individual exercises, role plays and case studies. Examples are long term care focused, using real life examples to which participants readily relate.
